Hematopathology Fellowship – Unexpected opening for 2027-2028 – UCI

2026-08-03

Program Overview
UCI’s Hematopathology Fellowship program is a 1-year program designed to provide comprehensive training in diagnostic hematopathology and laboratory hematology, including morphologic evaluation of peripheral blood, body fluids, bone marrow, lymph node and other tissues. Fellows also gain experience in performance of bone marrow procedure (including through the UCI simulation lab), interpretation of laboratory hematology, coagulation, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, chromosomal and molecular cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostics.

Facilities: The fellow is trained and serves as the primary consultant for the hematology laboratory mainly in the UCI Medical Center located with approximately 1.4 million hematology and coagulation tests per year and more than 2,500 hematopathology cases, including bone marrow, flow cytometry, lymph node, other tissue and referral/consultation cases. UCI Health also has an expanding regional presence and has opened a new Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in Irvine, California, further increasing the diverse and complex range of hematopathology cases received for review.  The fellow is also provided with learning opportunities at Children’s Health of Orange County (CHOC) for pediatric hematopathology and access to expert didactics through the teaching faculty at UCI and at the annual Tutorial on Neoplastic Hematopathology. There are abundant opportunities for conducting scholarly and research activities in the broad field of hematopathology.

Community: The UCI Medical Center is located in Orange, California, south of Los Angeles, within proximity to beautiful beaches, outdoor activities, shopping, Disneyland and other amenities.

Faculty: The fellowship program was established by Dr. Xiaohui Zhao with program directorship transitioning Dr. Genevieve Crane in anticipation of Dr. Zhao’s retirement.  Additional teaching faculty includes Dr. Sherif Rezk, Dr. Imran Siddiqi, Dr. Ashley Gamayo, Dr. Jefferson Chan, Dr. Jesse Qiao, Dr. Fabiola Quintero-Rivera, Dr. Minh-Ha Tran, Dr. Ying Zhang, Dr. Thomas Lee and Dr. Robert Edwards.
